Calcium chloride products are used as a plant nutrient in pre-harvest treatments of crop foliage, fruits and vegetables. Low calcium content in fruits and vegetables is blamed for decay and physiological disorders in fruits and vegetables.
Pre-harvest applications of calcium chloride are used to provide supplemental calcium to plants and growing fruit to delay aging, reduce post-harvest decay, improve firmness, and control the development of physiological disorders. For example, calcium chloride is sprayed several times throughout the growing season to prevent the development of bitter pit in apples after harvest.
On peaches, pre-harvest sprays of calcium chloride can increase fruit size and improve quality while enhancing shelf life. Calcium chloride sprays have also been shown to increase pear yields and improve the quality of oranges. The growth, quality and shelf life of tomatoes are enhanced by the application of calcium chloride to plant soil and to foliage during the fruit growth stage.
