Desmedipham is a post-emergence herbicide that is approved for use in the EU. It has a low aqueous solubility and is semi-volatile. It is not usually persistent in soils or in water. Desmedipham is relatively non-toxic to mammals and is also an irritant. It is moderately toxic to birds, most aquatic organisms, honeybees and earthworms.

Desmedipham is the active ingredient in Betanex and desmedipham plus phenmedipham are the active ingredients in Betamix, selective postemergence herbicides for control of broadleaf weeds in sugarbeet. Desmedipham is used alone or in combination with phenmedipham by over 90% of the sugarbeet growers in eastern North Dakota and Minnesota.

The solubility of desmedipham in water is about 7 ppm. This means that only 0.0006 pounds of desmedipham would be soluble in 10 gallons of water. Typically, from0.25 to 0.5 pounds of desmedipham is applied in 10 gallons of water so the emulsifier in Betanex must keep the desmedipham in suspension to allow a trouble-free application. Normally the emulsifiers work well but sometimes a portion of the Betanex starts to come out of suspension. When this occurs, a white precipitate is formed.

This precipitate can plug screens and nozzles during herbicide application. The extent of this problem varies from farm to farm for no apparent reason. With this in mind, experiments were initiated to investigate factors that may lead to increased amounts of precipitate in the Betanex and Betamix spray solution and to determine methods for reducing that precipitate.
