DEFINITION |
Magnesium aluminum silicate is a water-washed natural smectite clay that hydrates easily. Used in high pH personal care compositions such as depilatory, waving and hair relaxer products. Stabilizes both oil-in-water (o/w) and water-in-oil emulsions (w/o) at low concentrations (typically 1-2%) containing anionic or nonionic surfactants. The smectite colloidal structure effectively keeps the internal phase droplets suspended and separated and reduces the tendency of emulsions to thin out and break at elevated temperatures. Fine off-white to tan-greenish powder, odorless, pH 9.5 (w/w 5%). Viscosity about 500cps (4% solution). Insoluble but dispersible in water. |

USAGE |
It can be used add to water phase of formulas. Best when added to hot water (80oC) to reduce the hydrating time (15min vs 45min). Use a homogenizer for fastest results. Typical use level 3-5%. |
