Glyoxal has a broad spectrum activity with strong bactericidal and virucidal action. Unlike other active ingredients used in disinfectants, glyoxal is effective against the spores of anaerobic bacteria and some types of viruses.

Glyoxal is mostly used in combination with other active ingredients and not as a single disinfectant. Combining glyoxal with other active disinfectants such as aldehydes (glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde) and quaternary ammonium compounds such as benzalkonium chloride improves their antimicrobial activity and decreases the likelihood of micro-organisms becoming resistant.
