Epoxy has several distinct advantages over standard primers. The body filler will adhere better to the epoxy-coated surface than it will to bare metal. The other advantage is that when you first spray your car's bare metal body with a coat of epoxy, you are protecting the steel, or aluminum, surface against corrosion, which body filler will not do.

For optimal adhesion, the best time to apply body filler to the epoxy-covered surface is during the primer's curing time, which is usually within 24 hours, depending on manufacturer. While it cures, epoxy is porous, so when the body filler is applied its molecules become intertwined with the epoxy, forming a weld-like bond. And as the body filler cures, it creates heat, which in turn helps the epoxy cure quicker, thus making the bond between the two even stronger.
