A pigment printing binder for textiles was prepared by adding methyl acrylate groups to wheat gluten. A set of cotton/polyester blend poplin control fabrics were printed with four print paste formulations that differed in binder type: acrylic, vinyl acetate, and two types of butadiene acrylic binders. A second set of fabrics were printed with print paste formulations containing modified gluten cobinders in combination with each of the commercial binders. The print paste formulations were prepared with two types of pigments, diarylide yellow and azoic scarlet.
The printed fabrics were evaluated according to standard ASTM and AATCC test methods to determine if the addition of gluten cobinders to print pastes yielded equivalent or improved performance properties. Results showed that the modified gluten cobinder did not affect the fastness to laundering, dry cleaning, perspiration, and light but slightly lowered the fastness to crocking and made the fabrics slightly stiffer. A benefit of the modified gluten cobinder was that it slightly increased the viscosity of many of the print paste formulations and reduced the amount of thickener that was needed.
