Horse and cow wastes are both valuable garden amendments. While neither has the high amounts of nutrients found in bat guano, for example, both manures are useful -- and inescapable -- byproducts of farming and ranching. Of all the different animal wastes that can safely be used to boost garden texture and fertility, horse and cow wastes are the closest to one another in terms of nutrient composition. But depending on your circumstances and garden needs, one type may have the edge over the other.

 

Significance

Like compost, farm animal manures improve the texture of soil, allowing roots to spread more easily, while also enabling proper drainage. Manure is best known as a good source of nitrogen, one of the three primary ingredients needed for plant health. Nitrogen is responsible for optimum growth by promoting healthy foliage and stems. Manure also contains potassium, which is especially important for strong root systems. In addition, the amendment provides some phosphorus, which helps plants resist disease.

Nitrogen Content

In general, fresh manure from cows and horses contains the same amount of nitrogen. But because horse waste has significantly less water content than cow manure, when it dries it contains almost twice as much nitrogen as cow manure. A unit of dried horse manure is made up of 2.3 percent nitrogen, while dairy cow waste has 1.3 percent nitrogen in the equivalent amount. Beef cow manure falls somewhere in between, at 1.7 percent nitrogen.

 

Additional Nutrients

Manure is also a reasonably good source of potassium. In this case, cow manure has the edge over horse manure. Dried horse manure is composed of about 1.7 percent potassium, while both dairy and beef cattle manure contain 3 percent potassium. Dairy cow and horse manure both have less than 1 percent phosphorus, while beef cattle is made of 1.2 percent phosphorus.

Availability

If you have access to either cow or horse manure, they are similar enough in nutrient content that it makes sense to use whichever of them is easiest to haul to your garden. Always use manure that has aged several months to reduce the risk of harmful pathogens; dried manure is also much lighter and easier to transport. In cases where you are purchasing manure, however, bagged cow manure is much more readily available than horse manure.
